Open Data Rocks, City owned properties on Gmaps

Posted by on Aug 12, 2010 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

If you have never checked out the COV Open Data Catalogue, it’s time to go take a look (link). While it may be just a boring set of lists of location and scheduling data, the things that it can be made to do are very useful. Take for example (link), a service assembled in spare time by a couple of VHS guys. Another excellent example, the Google maps which was assembled using the city’s database of their own properties. (map) Every property shown is owned by the city. Super useful if you ever want to ask the city for a place to start a social...

First Meeting, and Mailing List

Posted by on May 7, 2010 in Uncategorized | 1 comment

So the first meeting of VCL went extremely well, with a turnout of 12-14 people (with a few people coming late and a couple leaving early). Discussion was excited, and naturally hit the important topics. A big decision that was made was to switch to a mailing list, rather than using the forums on the website. That has been successfully set up, and everyone at the meeting should be signed up. If you haven’t gotten an e-mail about it yet you can e-mail me at the address posted on the main page and I’ll correct the e-mail address, or you can subscribe yourself here. The mailing list is where the discussion is happening, so if you want to hear all the juicy details, that is the place to be. And also, if you are interested in blogging here about topics related to VCL or a project that you are working on, just comment or shoot me an e-mail, and I can create a contributor account for you...

Tools Up

Posted by on Apr 21, 2010 in Uncategorized | 2 comments

A tool co-op needs tools, right? So far we have a pretty odd assortment of tools, as I have just been collecting tools that I’ve loaned out to people or stored other places. The List: *Radial Arm Saw, made by Sears/Craftsman, 10 inch blade. *Small Mitre Saw, make unknown. (Stored at Isaac’s workshop, so no photo). *A Metal-cutting Chopsaw. *Propane-Burning Forge. *110 kilo Blacksmith’s Anvil (Some pictures after the break) Then there’s the list of possible cheap acquisitions. *Tablesaw (large, a permanent fixture, not a dinky contractors saw) $400~ *Oxyacetylene Welding Torch, (small, beginners torch) free, currently lent to my...

The first post, the first meeting

Posted by on Apr 9, 2010 in Uncategorized | 2 comments

Hello everyone. This is the first post for the Vancouver Community Lab blog. It’s not totally clear what this blog will become at this point, so I won’t try to declare what it is going to be. For now, let’s just say that if you are part of the Collective and wish to start blogging here, just ask at a meeting or by e-mail, and I (Sam) can set you up with an account. The first meeting of the Vancouver Community Laboratory Collective (VCLC?) will be on wednesday may the 5th, at the Rhizome Cafe in Vancouver, as it says on the homepage. Hopefully we will begin posting interesting project and such soon, for now, that’s it....
